Three RED FLAGS When Looking at Sober Living Houses

Updated: May 14, 2023

Looking to go to drug addiction treatment for a substance use disorder is a brave choice. With opiate addiction and overdose rates on the rise all over the country, especially in Los Angeles, California; many suffering from addiction and alcohol substance abuse problems are seeking sober living environments to combat their issues and lead a life of recovery. However, all recovery homes at sober living environments are NOT created equal. Here are three red flags to look out for when looking at sober living homes:

Red Flag #1: Does not Require Regular Drug Screening/Breathalyzer Tests

Stepping into a sober living house for the first time can be an unnerving situation, evoking feelings of despair and uncertainty. You want to make sure that the sober living house you choose is comprised of sober individuals and housemates, as well as being run by qualified professionals. If there is no regular drug tests or alcohol screenings, chances are you should find somewhere else. There are many sober livings in Los Angeles who maintain regular testing schedules.

Red Flag #2: Lack of House Rules

To maintain a sober living that lives by the principles of the 12-step process, house rules are a mandatory requirement. For someone who has pushed themselves to the limits of their addictions, it can be easier for them to fall back into old habits and thinking without a solid foundation of necessary house rules to keep them accountable during their newfound sober journey. Make sure your sober living home has mandatory house rules and a way to enforce them.

Red Flag #3: No Certifications

Last, but certainly not least, you want to make sure your sober living home is certified to help treat alcoholism and addiction disorders. Los Angeles certified sober living environments have strict rules and prerequisites that they must adhere by to keep their credentials. If your journey leads to you a house that has their credentials, it is safe to believe that everything is being run fairly and justly by qualified professionals.
